Hairdressing Level 2 (fast track)

From catwalks to cruise ships, Christina Jeffery, is driven to succeed as a professional hair and make-up artist and already she’s worked with models from the agency which discovered supermodel Kate Moss.

The 25 year old Level 2 Fast-track Hair course student believes her staunch determination and ambition stems from her strict training as a ballerina:

“I was three years old when I began to dance, and the rigorous and regimented training I had in the Royal Ballet sowed the seeds for everything. I trained hard and then danced professionally all round the world, including a stint on the Queen Mary.”

But at 19, she was aware that her career was not on the dance floor:

Christina - make-up“I knew I had to have qualifications for what I wanted to do so I completed my training at the London Make-Up Academy, and now college has provided me with the hair-styling skills and expertise I require. It’s a fast-moving and intense course which will allow me to market myself as the complete hair and make-up artist.”

And she adds:

“As a dancer I had to support myself. I had to rely on the skills and talents I had. Now I am going in a different direction. The challenges and demands in this kind of industry are enormous, but that’s what make it’s more exciting and I will succeed.”

Christina’s worked at top London fashion shows and at viewings for private buyers at leading design houses and department stores. She’s also involved in charity work to raise awareness of human trafficking. And in her spare time? Christina just lives to dance!

Valeria Barone

level 3 beauty therapy, Malvern hills college

valeria baroneValeria moved here after leaving school in Sicily, specifically to study this course, as the cost of studying in Sicily was too high. Valeria started on Level 1 Hair and Beauty and on completion of this level she had to decide which direction to go in and decided on Beauty Therapy. After successfully completing Level 2 Valeria has nearly completed her final year of the Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy.

Valeria said that it was difficult studying at the start, as her English was not very good and she was quite shy, however with the help of her teachers and the other students she settled in and has really enjoyed her time at SWC, saying that her teachers have been brilliant, always helpful and encouraging, the technicians are also helpful and very good.

“Sarah my tutor is lovely, she is really helpful all the time, and explains everything, she has helped me settle in and made it easier for me especially being on my own over here”.

Valeria said she liked the practical sessions the best “As you get to practice the theory you have just learnt, it always helps to do the practical session as I think that is the best way to really learn. We started the practical sessions as soon as we started the course, which is good.”

“I would say that if someone was thinking of doing this course they have to like working with people, be sociable and like to interact with people from all walks of life. The course teaches you a lot about communication, how to relate to people and also about body language”.

“I have enjoyed all aspects of this course as I like learning, I have studied other courses alongside the beauty therapy course, I did Gel nails, spray tan, intimate waxing and ear piercing. You do have to pay for these extra courses but I did it so that I have as much experience as possible when I finish the course”
