Jeremy Wright MP visits Wellesbourne dentists as part of National APprenticeship Week

MP for Kenilworth and Southam Jeremy Wright toured a top Warwickshire dental practice as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

The MP visited Langman and Associates in Willow Drive, Wellesbourne to meet with apprentice Zoe Brain. He was given a tour of the practice before Zoe demonstrated the essential process of decontaminating used equipment.

Langman and Associates operates two NHS practices in Warwickshire, with a second practice in Stratford-upon-Avon and have a long history of taking on trainee dental nurses. Zoe, however,  is the practice’s first apprentice.

Mr Wright said: “I’m very much in favour of the expansion of apprenticeships. What we have here is the perfect example of a good apprenticeship which is a massive benefit not just to the person doing it but also the employer. This is an apprenticeship that is clearly working very well and I think there’s a lot of scope for many more successful apprenticeships across the county.”

Sam McConnell, senior dental nurse at the practice, said: “We’re committed to training, we’ve always had a trainee here. It’s a great way to start a career as an apprentice. An apprenticeship is beneficial to us because we are included in their learning.”

Warwickshire College has an outstanding reputation for training apprentices in a vast range of areas from traditional trades such as bricklaying, plumbing and carpentry to business administration, marketing, landscaping, photography, horse care, accounting and floristry.

Alison Scattergood, manager, work-based learning, said Warwickshire College excels in the way it matches the right apprentice to the right employer, regularly liaising between the tutor, employer and assessor.

She added: “We have experts in all areas. Many of our assessors are still working in the field. Our training and assessment is very thorough and rigorous due to the fact that staff are completely up-to-date with current practice.”
