Lego artwork is a hit

When former Warwickshire College student, Aaron Savage, first created his Lego album covers for a college project, he could hardly have imagined that they would prove so popular.

Last week, Aaron, from Stratford-upon-Avon, saw his designs featured in the Metro, Sun, Guardian, Telegraph and Daily Mail, after they were spotted by a photo agency on photo sharing website, Flickr.

The 25 designs were created for a college project – photography for publication – which Aaron completed as part of his HND in Visual Communications at the Leamington centre. They include many iconic album covers – such as Blondie’s ‘Parallel Lines’, Madonna’s ‘True Blue’ and Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born in the USA’ – as well some newer and less well-known choices.

Aaron said: “I first created the designs for a college project, having been inspired by other artists I had seen recreating images using Lego. Album covers was an easy choice as I am passionate about music and have a growing record collection.

“I spent a lot of time researching, establishing which Lego pieces I could get hold of and which album covers would be possible to recreate. Most of the pieces were sourced from the Lego website or from Ebay.

I created the whole series of images in 48 hours – assembling the blocks, photographing and using Photoshop to correct light, colours and sizes, and to merge photos where necessary.

“My favourite image is the Elvis one, because I feel it captures the emotion and movement of the original cover – not easy things to reproduce with a hard medium such as Lego. A lot of the covers are iconic but a few are from newer or less-known genres. I wanted there to be at least one or two covers that everyone could recognise.

“The course helped us to explore our ideas, to develop and critique them. The tutors were really encouraging and challenged us to get the best out of us. What I liked the most was the freedom to be creative in the many different formats the course offered.”

Tutor Jesse Lyons, oversaw Aaron’s original Lego designs project. She said: “Seeing Aaron's work in the national newspapers has been very exciting. I feel delighted that Aaron has achieved recognition for his designs and I hope that this will inspire him to continue creating his amazing artwork.”
