Going green at Moreton Morrell
The Moreton Morrell Students Association has held its first
ever Go Green Week in support of the NUS and People & Planet’s
climate change campaigns.
The week also supported the Olympic value of respect - taking
care of health and the environment.
A whole week of events took place including the Can Film
Festival, plastic fantastic, local food days, ‘end of the world’
party and can amnesty.
The Can Film Festival invited students to come along to the bar
and watch a film, paying the entry fee of an empty can. The night
was a huge success and the can banks filled up nicely.
The first ever local food day was held in the refectory. The
head chef organised a lunchtime roast that was food mile friendly.
Students sampled the delights of locally produced turkey and
fresh-out-of-the-ground vegetables, concluding it was one of the
best meals the refectory had ever served.
The Student Association teamed up with the Bistro Bar to offer
deals on all fair-trade and Rainforest Alliance drinks. This also
tied in with the national day of action against poor trade deals
from producing countries. The can amnesty also ran throughout the
day.
The week encouraged students to use the recently-installed
recycling bins which were full to overflowing several times during
the week. On the back of this event, other developments are taking
place such as the student allotments in association with the local
food project, bike hire funded by the student association and
eco-green societies.
