Working in the UK
Some international students work while they study in the
UK.
If you want to work you will need to
check your Student Visa stamp to see if you are eligible to work
part-time.
You are allowed to work if your
student visa or sticker states:
'Able to work as authorised by The Secretary of State'
or
'Work (and any changes) must be
authorised'
You are not allowed to work if your
student visa or sticker states:
'No work or recourse to public funds’
or
‘No work or engaging in business'.
If you have been issued with this stamp and your course is
longer than six months, you should challenge this remark and ask to
speak with the Entry Clearance Manager, to try and get this
removed, before coming to the UK.
Conditions of work as an International student on full
student visa
- Depending on the course you are studing, you can work either 10
or 20 hours during term time and full-time during college
vacations
- You must not engage in business, self-employment or provide
services as a professional sportsperson or entertainer
- You must not pursue a career by filling a permanent full-time
vacancy
It is important that you follow the conditions attached to your
student visa. The Home Office is very strict and if they discover
any irregularities when you apply for a visa extension (FLR(S)) it
will put your chances of extending your visa at risk. Visit the
UKBA website for
guidance.
If you're not sure whether you are entitled to work in the UK,
contact the International Office for further advice.
Student Dependants
If you were given permission to stay in the UK for 12 months or
more, your husband, wife or civil partner may be able to work full
time as long as they do not fill a full-time vacancy, and they hold
a student dependant visa.
