Student case studies
Sammi Drew and Kayleigh Dodd -
‘NeatMoves’ and Level 1 Diploma in Animal Care
Sammi and Kayleigh both attended ‘NeatMoves’,
a programme for young people not in education or training.
‘NeatMoves’ is an eight-week, practical programme which gives
students the opportunity to try out a range of skills in areas like
animal care, horticulture, farming and conservation. Both
students then progressed to the level 1 Animal Care programme,
specialising in animal welfare
Sammi says: “I didn’t do very well at school –
I left in year 9 with no qualifications. I have always had
pets and initially wanted to work in a zoo, so when I saw a leaflet
advertising NeatMoves which included animal care, I decided to go
for it. It was good to be able to try out different skills on
the programme. My favourite part was feeding and watering the
animals. ‘NeatMoves’ helped me decide what I wanted to do and
after the programme I joined the animal care course as I want to go
into vet nursing. Studying at college is so much easier than
studying at school, you can focus on your practical skills and you
get treated like an adult. I would recommend this to other
people who don’t know what to do – you build so much confidence and
it gives you something to do.”
Kayleigh says: “I heard about the ‘NeatMoves’
programme from Connexions and from friends. You can try out a
good variety of different things and you get to meet new
people. I had been going to sixth form but was finding that
difficult, partly because I am dyslexic. At college, you are
treated more like an adult and you get more help and attention –
they have a specialist dyslexia unit here at Moreton Morrell.
I have always wanted to work with animals – I have got so many pets
that people say I might as well have my own farm! I always
said I would succeed, no matter how hard it is. My dream is
to become an RSPCA Officer and I know exactly what I need to do to
get there.”
