Success stories
Warwickshire College sports students have excelled in a
wide range of sporting activities this year.
British Colleges Sport Championships
The college won a gold medal in swimming and three silver medals
in cross country and women’s rugby at the finals of the British
Colleges Sport (BCS) West Midlands competition.
Tennis
Michael Barraclough and Tom Holmes reached the finals
representing the college at the national AEGON Team Tennis Senior
Students Finals in March 2010.
The team came third in their group and were nominated for
Regional Junior Sports Team of the Year.
Men’s Rugby and Football
For the first time we had three players Adam Gwilliam, Sam
Bennett and Dave Howes in the England Colleges Rugby Union team in
games against Wales Colleges and Wales Boys Clubs.
Several players were selected to represent Warwickshire in the
National Rugby Under-20s Championship, and six players were
selected for the West Midlands Colleges.
Our men’s Football Team reached the quarter finals of the BCS
National Football Cup.
Alternative sports
Wheelchair basketball, korfball, American football, boxing,
fencing and trampolining were among the sports sampled by students
at Henley in Arden.
Professional coaches served up three-week taster sessions to
small groups of 12 students, giving them the chance to try
something new and bolster that all-important CV.
Community
Charity
Students raised more than £660 for Children in Need through leg
waxing, manicures and selling cakes. Earlier in the year, they
chased ‘human hare’ Sean Bowden around the Henley in Arden campus
to raise money for Sport Relief.
Volunteering
Nadine Payton from the National Diploma in Sport Development
Coaching and Fitness was recognised with an award from the
Volunteer Centre in Stratford, for her commitment for serving her
community for 200 hours of volunteer football coaching.
