Where are they now?
Studying equine isn't just about getting a
qualification, the courses and learning environment are focused on
creating employable and work-ready students. Find out where they
are now...
Russell Guire – BSc
(Hons) in Equine and Sports Science
Russell has set up his own business, Centaur Biomechanics which
uses specialist software to analyse the gait of horses, and designs
exercises to minimise the risk of injury. Russell also set up
Centaur Training and Livery, a purpose built training facility for
horses and riders and, in 2011, launched a third business, Position
Perfect, providing a range of products designed to improve rider’s
position and performance.
Russell says: “I suffer with severe dyslexia and I have to say
that the learning support given by the college was fantastic.
The smaller class sizes also meant I could cope with learning in a
way I don’t think I could have done otherwise. Obtaining my degree
was a great honour, giving me great pleasure and motivation.”
Georgina Crossman - BA (Hons) Equine Studies
Georgina is now self-employed and about to launch “equiRED”
which is dedicated to improving the understanding and benefits of
the horse industry, alongside advancing communication within the
equine sector and the wider community. She also works as a
Research Consultant for the British Equestrian Federation. Prior to
this, Georgina did many years of lecturing and holds an MBA in
Equine Business Management and a PhD in Politics.
She says: “Looking for a degree to study at university I came
across an “equine studies” course. Instantly intrigued by an
opportunity to study my passion in life, little did I realise the
impact it was to have on my future. Thank you Moreton Morrell, I
wouldn’t be where I am today without you.”
Sarah
Bignell - HND & BA (Hons) Equine Studies
Sarah is the team leader for further education at Hadlow
College. Here she is responsible for lecturing and course managing
as well as teaching practical and theory lessons to higher and
further education students. On top of this, Sarah has qualified as
an Advanced Learning Coach, has a PGCE and has done freelance
instructing and rehabilitating, set up a small livery yard and
worked as an Assistant Yard Manager.
She says: “Completing the course at Moreton Morrell has been
fundamental to my career and I have a lot to thank the lecturers
for.”
Katy Ferrari -
BA (Hons) Equine Studies
Katy is a manager at a large equestrian centre in Derbyshire
where her main job is to manage the livery yard of 30 horses on
full livery. Katy started out as an event groom then moved to
Toyota in their IT department, and later to Vodafone’s
technical department. She returned to working with horses after
realising office work wasn’t for her.
She says: “I have put my degree to good use, the variety of work
I have done shows that even in other fields, my degree has been
taken seriously.”
Lee Moulson -
BA (Hons) Equine Business Management in the Horseracing
Industry
Lee had a great background knowledge of the horseracing industry
before coming to Warwickshire College to undertake his degree. He
had worked for racehorse trainer Peter Hodger and National Hunt
jockey Ed Hendersen, as well as being an amateur jockey himself.
Having completed his degree Lee is now working as the Commercial
Sales Manager for Warwick racecourse, where he is responsible for
developing commercial enterprises and increasing revenue for the
racecourse. Prior to this he worked as a hospitality sales
executive at Cheltenham racecourse and then two years for a
commercial radio station.
Renee
Fleming - BSc (Hons) Equine Science
Whilst studying for her degree, Renee developed a passion for
microbiology. She now works as a technical support scientist in the
microbiology department of a pathology laboratory within an NHS
hospital.
She says: “My current goal is to gain the required
qualifications to become a biomedical scientist. One day I’d like
to do a U-turn back to my equine roots and use my skills to assist
in scientific research that will enhance the lives of our equine
companions.”
Ulrike Bluemel - BSc (Hons) in Equine and Human Sports
Science
Ulrike works as a chiropractor for both humans and horses.
Ulrike learnt the art of human and equine massage during her
degree, before going on to study advanced techniques at McTimoney
chiropractic college.
She says: “Warwickshire College was a great grounding for me, as
when I came to college I knew I was passionate about horse welfare,
but didn’t know what to do next. Moreton Morrell steered me in the
right direction and created a lot of pathways and opportunities for
me.
Beth Maloney - HND Equine Studies
Beth is the Director of Participation at British Equestrian
Federation, continuing to develop Horses & Courses Ltd and
working as a Lead Inspector for private further education colleges.

MBA, worked as a dressage rider and instructor, set up her own
equine distance learning company and worked as the Head of Equine
and most recently as Assistant Principal, at further and higher
education colleges.

of very inspirational and knowledgeable lecturers. On top of this,
a diverse curriculum that has stood me in good stead for a diverse
career.”
