The farm
Agricultural students spend their time at the farm learning
the jobs involved with everyday farming.
The farm, at Moreton Morrell, is an independent commercial
unit over a 345 hectare block of land. It functions as an
educational resource for our agricultural students. It allows
students to be part of a working farm that operates in the same way
as any other.
Lectures in animal husbandry give students the chance to learn
how to handle animals and the theory behind the practice. They work
with the herdsmen and stockmen on a one to one basis. Duties
include milking, feeding, bedding and managing the animals.
Arable production takes place under the guidance of lecturers in
the first year, and in the second year students are given two
fields to control, manage, plan and execute events.
We have a wide range of manual and mechanical tools, to broaden
the learning experience. The machinery used at the farm is typical
of an intensive mixed farm practising up to date husbandry. We have
machinery that covers aspects of work in the field – ploughing,
cultivation work, muck spreading and mowing. Students can
experience the processes required to maintain feed production,
along with the use of outside contractors for grass and maize
harvesting, and muck spreading.
The farm is in the DEFRA Entry Level Stewardship and all
enterprises are in Quality Assurance Schemes.
