Sheep unit
The flock consists of 380 Suffolk Cross and North
Country Mule ewes, which, when crossed with our pedigree Suffolk
and Charolais rams, will produce high quality lamb.
This year a small groups of ewes will also be tupped by Texel or
Berrichon rams so the students can follow the progress of the lambs
from birth to slaughter and compare growth weights and conformation
of different crossbreeds. The College farm also runs a small flock
of pedigree Zwartble sheep.
Lambing is in March with all ewes housed six to
eight weeks before lambing to provide careful feed monitoring,
intensive shepherding and a rest period for grassland. Fat lambs
are sold either at market, direct to slaughter houses or through
direct sale to food establishments.
