Student success

A level students talk about their results.

Becky Sewell

Becky Sewell - 2011

Becky took A levels in Business, Psychology and Sociology and needed three As to get her place at Birmingham University to study Law, which she achieved.

Becky said: “I chose law because I wanted a subject which would give me a really good start in my career. “I did a year of A levels at school but I came to college because I really needed a change. College is very different to school, you have much more freedom and the independent learning style really suited me – it’s a good stepping stone to university.”

Angelica Bettencourt

Angelica Bettencourt - 2011

Angelica Bettencourt took A levels in Sociology, Health & Social Care and Film Studies and achieved CDE, enabling her to study Early Childhood Education Studies at Warwickshire College.

Angelica is originally from Portugal and had extra support from the college with her written English skills, including extra time in exams.

Angelica said: “I chose to study at college because I wanted a new experience, to meet new people and experience new things. College helped me learn to study independently and I think I have matured more quickly than I would have done by staying on at school.

“I really noticed a change in my work with the extra language support, which showed me how to write things properly and helped me with assignments and coursework.”

Callum Ramsay

Callum Ramsay - 2011

Callum took the bold step of taking A level Business in just one year after narrowly missing out on his preferred university place the year before. He needed a B in either business or his media retake to get the BBB he needed to go to Birmingham University to study Sociology – and he was delighted to get ABB.

Callum said: “I was disappointed to miss out on my university place last year by just a few marks and decided to take A level business in just a year to give myself a better chance. The college were flexible enough to allow me to take Business Studies in a year as well as retaking my Media A level.

“I have chosen to study Sociology at university as I found it interesting to look at all the different aspects of society – the subject was very varied and stimulating. I am thoroughly looking forward to studying it at university.

“I really enjoyed my time at college, I enjoyed an excellent relationship with my tutors and really appreciated the freedom the college offered.”

Sophia James

Sophia James - 2011

Sophia James was delighted with her C grade in A Level Sociology and merit in Performing Arts.
Sophia said: "I'm really pleased. I'm going to do broadcast journalism at Wolverhampton University. It's a foundation degree so it's two years and if I want to make it a full degree I just stay on for another year.”

Laura

Laura Reeves - 2010

A levels in Maths, Film and Business - 2010

I did maths because I was good at it at GCSE, business because I was really interested in it and wanted to study it at university and film studies because I’ve always been a bit of a TV addict!  I also did an extended project in my second year – the equivalent of an AS level - about the history of cricket and the Ashes tournament.

I got three As at level which meant I could study Business and Law at the University of Warwick.

After university, I’d like to do some volunteer work in Australia before I start my career.  I am looking forward to the challenge of moving away to university and doing something new.
