Foundation Learning

Foundation Learning is a ladder for progression to help those who have missed out on learning or need to overcome difficult challenges; and to help them develop skills for employment, further study or independent living.

Foundation Learning programmes combine vocational learning with functional skills and personal and social development. They offer learners choice and the opportunity to specialise – and a clear path towards level 2 qualifications, apprenticeships, employment or other goals.

Diplomas, Certificates and Awards

A Diploma, Certificate and Award is a general vocational course linked to a variety of occupations, and may include work experience.
These courses are arranged in modules, giving you flexibility.

First Diplomas are equivalent to four GCSEs at grade A-C
First Certificate are equivalent to two GSCEs at A*-C

NVQs are work-related, competence based qualifications and are offered from Levels 1 to 4 in an assortment of occupational areas. The length of the course will depend on how quickly you complete the tasks required.

AS/A2 Levels

A Levels are divided into 6 units. In the first year, you study the AS Level comprising of three units, which is a qualification in its own right.
In the second year you study A2 level, including a further three units which explore the subject in greater depth.

A2 units on their own don’t make up a qualification, but taken together with AS units they make up a full GCE A level. Generally, you’ll take four AS Level subjects in your first year, and then concentrate on three A2 level subjects in your second year.

New Diplomas

The Diploma is a new qualification for young people aged 14-19. It combines course study with practical experience, so as well as learning at College, you will also get the chance to work in a sector that interests you.

All Diplomas will require students to achieve a minimum standard in English, Maths and ICT, complete a project and do a minimum of 10 days work experience.

The Diploma is available at three levels:

Foundation – equivalent to five GCSEs at grades D to G

Higher – equivalent to seven GCSEs at grades A* to C

Advanced – equivalent to three and a half A levels
